Holes in the pages of medieval books are common. They were easily made (by the parchment maker’s knife), as in this wonderful case. Fixing it by stitching the hole together with strings of parchment is also common: parchment makers did it all the time, leaving behind “scars” on the page. What is totally unusual, however, is the repairs seen in this 14th-century book in Uppsala, Sweden. The damage is repaired, or at least masked, by good old broidery. It was done by the nuns who purchased the book in 1417. It is delightful to think that they took the effort to make a medieval hole disappear by replacing it with patterns like this, made up from pieces of silk in the most vivid of colors.

Okay, regarding that virgin/moon goddess, I tend to raise my eyebrows at the whole Great Mother Goddess thing. Yes, there are several goddesses found in many different ancient cultures, but I don’t like it when people group them all together as one. From what I can tell there are similarities, yes, but there are a great many differences too, and dismissing those by lumping them all together as one Goddess doesn’t do anyone any favors. I feel like that whole movement tends to attract the crazies when archaeology is involved. This got really long so I’m putting it under a read more.

As for the hebrew - the gospels in which Mary appears are in greek, not hebrew, so Aramaic has nothing to do with it?

But what they are referring to I think is Isiah 7:14 which, when taken out of its original context is supposed to be one of the messianic prophesies fulfilled in the gospel. The word used is “almah” which means, like the post said, maiden - it is associated with youth and has a sexual association to it, but does not at all means virgin. This is in contrast to the biblical word for virgin, aka woman who has not had teh sex “betulah” which appears mostly in legalistic language, but not exclusively.

As far as I know from the Gospels, Mary being a virgin is very much a key story in there. It isn’t a wording thing.

If you want to pick apart the supposed fulfilled prophecy aspect - the sentence continues from “and ‘almah’ will conceive and bare a son…” and ends with “will name him Immanuel.” Also, this is fulfilled within the book of Isiah, I think so there is that as well.

you know, I've been running this through my head for a few days since I liked it on a gut instinct and while it is true for men with Bronies, I can't seem to come up with other examples? Men who like other things created for women are assumed to be less manly and gay, which opens a whole 'nother bag of worms. Musicals? Clearly gay. Chickflicks? Whipped/ only doing it to get laid. What is the cool nickname for dudes who like Gilmore Girls? Dresses?

The only thing that even comes close is "metrosexual" which again, is commenting on sexuality and is sued as an insult as much as a compliment. That is a term not for fans, but for men who care about appearance.

As far as women, this is much more true across the board. And that sucks.

But I think, other than MLP, I really can't think of anything where a large group defies the gender norm and is welcomed. Either male or female
